Our Sacred Institution
The Sacred Patriarchal and Stavropegial Monastery of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou
in Astoria stands as a premier spiritual lighthouse for the Orthodox Christian
community. Under the direct canonical jurisdiction of the Ecumenical
Patriarchate of Constantinople, our monastery serves as a center for prayer,
Hellenic education, and the preservation of sacred traditions for the faithful
of Astoria and the greater New York metropolitan area.
The Life of Saint Irene Chrysovalantou
A noble of Cappadocia who chose the heavenly kingdom over an imperial throne,
Saint Irene (9th–10th century) famously declined a marriage proposal from the
Byzantine Emperor to embrace the monastic life at the Chrysovalantou Monastery.
Her life was defined by profound asceticism, the gift of prophecy, and
remarkable humility. Tradition holds that she was gifted three apples from
Paradise by Saint John the Apostle—sacred fruit that sustained her spiritually
and physically. Today, she is vibrantly remembered for the miraculous bowing of
cypress trees during her nocturnal prayers and her elevation in spirit and body
during deep communion with God.
